Students present papers at medieval history conference

On Saturday March 29th Nickolas Martin and Tammy Martin, both seniors in the History Department, presented papers at “Meeting in the Middle: the Undergraduate Medieval Conference of Longwood University” in Farmville, VA. Both Nick and Tammy represented the department and the college admirably, presenting well-researched papers in an engaging manner.

Each year, the organizers present the Abels-Johnson Award for Excellence to the student who gives the best paper at the conference. The w2014 03 31 Nickolas Martin and Tammy Martin BAC history students Students present papers at medieval history conferenceinner is chosen from amongst the numerous presenters by the plenary speaker, usually an internationally-renowned medievalist. This year’s plenary speaker was Professor William Aird of Edinburgh University in Scotland. From a strong field, Professor Aird decided to award the prize to Tammy for her paper “Leprosy and Kingship: A Questionable Pairing in an Unstable Land,” and gave Nick an honorable mention for his contribution, “The Campaign to the Holy Land that Dethroned a Christian Emperor.” The photograph below shows Tammy and Nick with Professor Aird.

We would like to congratulate both students, and especially Tammy, on this wonderful achievement.
