Dr. Eugene Thuot, Professor of Government and Political Philosophy and Director of the Honors Institute, has been selected as the winner of the Adrian Award for Teaching Excellence for 2013-2014. Dr. Thuot, who came to the Abbey in 1975, earned his B. A. in Philosophy from Assumption College, then studied Theology at the Abbaye de Brogne in Belgium before earning a Bachelor’s degree in the same subject from the University of Ottawa. Dr. Thuot crowned these impressive achievements by receiving his M. A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Chicago.
In recommending Dr. Thuot for this honor, the members of the Faculty Development Committee cited not only the many nominations that he received from his students and colleagues, but also the extraordinary quality of the comments that accompanied them. Dr. Thuot’s students describe him as “a wise mentor and advisor,” as well as “a friend.” One wrote, “Dr. Thuot will always have a special place in my heart.” Another said, “Dr. Thuot is generous with his time, solicitous of his students…[and] a deeply humble and pious man.” Another student characterized him as “a devoted teacher” who “genuinely cares about sharing the wonder of philosophy with his students.” Best of all, several students noted, “From him, one can learn not only about philosophy but also how to live a virtuous life.”
The members of the Faculty Development Committee lauded Dr. Thuot for “the outstanding and assiduous work that he does in the classroom,” the many hours he spends with students outside of class, and the customized feedback that he gives them. Dr. Thuot’s colleagues also cited his “love for philosophy,” his “care and thoughtfulness for his students,” the “clarity and thoroughness” of his teaching, and his enthusiasm. In addition, the Committee praised him for “his superlative work as the Director of the Honors Institute for so many years and for his passion to ensure that the Institute ran impeccably and attracted students of the highest quality.”
As many of you know, the Adrian Award for Teaching Excellence was established in 1984 by Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Adrian to recognize and reward outstanding teaching by faculty members at Belmont Abbey College. The Faculty Development Committee selects the winner based on faculty and student nominations as well as on a thorough examination of nominees’ course evaluations and syllabi.
