The Belmont Abbey Debate Team returned from Baton Rouge, Louisiana yesterday after competing at Louisiana State University’s Mardi Gras Classic Tournament this weekend. The tournament hosted over 50 individual competitors overall and included registration from 13 schools.
In team debate, Logan Torve and Adrianna Hodges won three of four preliminary rounds. The team went on to drop in semifinals against Northwestern University. In individual debate, the students worked hard to advance to quarterfinals. In junior varsity, Eric Swartz and Mary Rose Stepnowski each went 2-4, putting them one ballot away from advancing in their division. In a collapsed varsity and professional division, Logan Torve entered elimination rounds on a 4-2 record. In order to achieve this, he faced various coaches and graduate students who were competing as professionals in the division. He worked his way up from seventh seed by dropping only one out-round ballot between quarterfinals and semifinals. After nine rounds of individual debate, Logan placed second overall for the tournament.
