Carlos Harold Van Orden, 85, died February 2, 2017 in Leavenworth, Kansas. He was born on April 26, 1931 at 7 Adams Street in Newton, New Jersey to the late Carlos Nelson and Elizabeth Keen Van Orden. Van Orden was-a retired Associate Professor Emeritus of Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, North Carolina. Prior to this he was an Assistant Professor at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont. Carlos was a graduate of Newton High School, The Peddie School, Rider University, and Fairleigh Dickinson University. After retiring to Emerald Isle, NC he was an Adjunct Professor at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, NC and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, NC. Prior to his teaching career he was employed by communications companies in NJ, NY, VA, and IL and operated the Western Union and taxi companies in Newton, NJ.

Van Orden was in the United States Navy during the Korean War with duty on the USS Currituck as a communicator and cryptographer and later as a reservist teaching communications at the Naval Reserve Station in Trenton, NJ. He was active in Rotary International, Chambers of Commerce, town museums, and various educational associations. Van Orden was the 1985 Belmont, NC Citizen of the Year. After sixty years of marriage, Carlos was predeceased by the former Elvera Mae Sode of Chicago, IL in 2015. He is survived by four daughters: Mary (Andrew) Bibb of Jericho,VT; Ellen (Michael) Ammel of Leavenworth, KS; Ann (Michael) Bigay of Mount Joliet; TN: and Cara (Todd) Moore of Spotsylvania, VA; eighteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Monks of Belmont Abbey Monastery. Internment will be at the Norwich University Cemetery.
