Tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of Theology – Generalist
Position Summary
Belmont Abbey College invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Theology.
Job Responsibilities
The area of specialization is open, but the College is looking for a candidate who is deeply committed to Scripture, the Church’s living tradition, and the magisterium. Candidates will be expected to teach the two theology classes that are part of our institution’s Core Curriculum, the upper-level courses that are required in the Theology Department’s three majors that fit with their expertise, and the classes offered by the BAC Diaconal Formation Program. The College is interested in an excellent teacher who is passionate about undergraduate education and who feels a calling to be part of a small, Catholic, and Benedictine liberal arts institution like ours. Familiarity with feedback-based assessment methods, such as contract grading and grade agreements, and a track record of assigning AI-resistant assessments such as oral exams and presentations are preferred. A Ph.D. in Theology or a related field by the time of the appointment is highly desired, but outstanding ABD candidates will also be considered. Belmont Abbey College requires all the members of the Theology Department to petition the local bishop for a mandatum. Furthermore, the College expects all its theologians to abide and proactively engage with the Benedictine Hallmarks, Ex Corde Ecclesiae, and the College’s mission that “in all things God may be glorified.”
Qualifications
The teaching load is 4/4. Classes will be scheduled both during the daytime and in the evenings. Furthermore, courses will use different teaching modalities, including in-person, hybrid, and fully online formats. Accordingly, experience with Canvas and online education is highly valued. Service to the department, the College, the broader community, scholarly development, and contributing positively to the College’s mission are all expected. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
The successful candidate will be a talented and dedicated academic who is deeply and enthusiastically committed to the Catholic mission of Belmont Abbey College. Preference will be given to those candidates who can demonstrate 1) a record of excellence in undergraduate teaching and a sense of teaching as a vocation; 2) a philosophy of teaching that supports the approach to education expressed in St. John Paul II’s Ex Corde Ecclesiae; and 3) a strong desire to teach at a liberal arts institution where the academic program is “guided by the Catholic intellectual tradition and the Benedictine spirit of prayer and learning.”
