Meet Dr. Toni Berbrick

OF NOTE:

Dr. Berbrick began her accounting career with Coopers & Lybrand, now part of PricewaterhouseCoopers, in the New York Metro Region. During her time with the firm, she specialized in valuation and due diligence procedures related to mergers and acquisitions. She later transitioned to the private sector, where she continued to advance throughout her 25-plus year career and served in several leadership roles, including Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Audit Executive, Director of Internal Audit, Controller, and Certified Fraud Examiner.

Dr. Berbrick was also a practicing CPA in New Jersey, North Carolina, and South Carolina until recently moving her CPA licenses to inactive status to focus on completing her doctoral studies. She earned her Doctor of Business Administration in Accounting, with doctoral research focused on cybersecurity risk and its implications for financial leadership, governance, and organizational decision-making.

She is a member of ISACA, the Institute of Internal Auditors, and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. She has also served on the Board of the Charlotte Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors and on the Chapter’s Academic Relations Committee.

Her teaching areas include accounting, auditing, internal controls, risk management, fraud examination, and forensic accounting.

KNOWN FOR:
Dr. Berbrick is known for connecting accounting education to real-world practice, drawing on her professional background in public accounting, corporate finance, internal audit, fraud examination, forensic accounting, and cybersecurity risk. She brings a practical, student-centered approach to the classroom, helping students understand how accounting, audit, internal controls, risk management, and ethical decision-making apply in today’s complex business environment.

WHEN NOT IN THE CLASSROOM, CAN OFTEN BE FOUND:
Dr. Berbrick lives on a farm in Huntersville with her husband, three horses, and two dogs. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family and traveling to visit her daughter in San Diego, her son and his family in Florida, including her granddaughter Daphne, and her son Eric’s family in Davidson as they prepare to welcome a new baby in the fall.
