Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Latin
LATIN PROFICIENCY IN A LIVING TRADITION
The Latin degree at Belmont Abbey College develops students’ proficiency in the Latin language, while offering a deep engagement with the rich tradition of Latin literature—from classical authors to the enduring tradition of practical Latin in the Catholic Church. Rooted in the immersive, living Latin method pioneered by Hans Ørberg, the program prepares students to read, write, speak, and think in Latin, while also connecting them with the foundational texts of the Western intellectual and Christian tradition. As interest in classical education grows nationwide, graduates of the program are increasingly well-positioned for careers in teaching at the primary, middle, and high school levels. They are also well-prepared for advanced study in graduate programs focused on Latin, classics, theology, philosophy, history, and related subjects.
Possible career paths:
Latin Language and Literature Teacher at the primary, middle, or high school level; Graduate studies in Latin, Classics, Theology, Philosophy, History, Law, or related fields.

In addition to the specific requirements listed in the section below, all students at the Abbey are required to earn credits in our core liberal arts curriculum.
In Collaboration with Veterum Sapientia Institute
As part of the Latin major, students benefit from the expertise and learning community of world-renowned Latinists with a passion for the Church, through our collaboration with the Veterum Sapientia Institute (VSI). Students will learn on campus in seated courses and online in synchronous face-to-face courses, studying alongside students from across the country. Class sizes are intentionally small to ensure personalized instruction. Belmont Abbey College’s classical languages programs utilize a unique and standard-setting pedagogy in teaching Latin and Greek as living languages.
Learning to speak conversationally with words that we encounter on a daily basis lays the foundation for grammar and mechanics upon which advanced fluency is built. We think of it as learning through the kind of informal conversation that we have every day around the kitchen table.
