Bachelor Degree (B.A.) in Greek Language*
BECOME CONVERSANT WITH THE GREEK LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
The Greek Major at Belmont Abbey College develops students’ proficiency in the Greek language, providing a broad understanding of Greek literature from its classical roots to its use by the Church Fathers and in the liturgy of the Eastern churches. Grounded in the immersive, living language method pioneered by Hans Ørberg and adapted for Greek by Santiago Carbonell Martínez, the program emphasizes active engagement with the language and original texts that form the foundation of a liberal arts education. This approach prepares students not only for careers teaching Greek at the primary, middle, or high school levels but also for advanced graduate study in Greek, classics, theology, and related fields, responding to the growing national interest in classical education.
Possible career paths:
Greek Language and Literature Teacher at the primary, middle, or high school level; Graduate Student in Greek, Classics, Theology, Philosophy, History, or related fields.

In Partnership with Veterum Sapientia Institute
As part of the Greek major, students have the opportunity to take online courses through our partnership with the Veterum Sapientia Institute (VSI). On-campus students begin with foundational courses taught by Belmont Abbey professors, then progress to upper-level courses online alongside Greek students from across the country. Like the Abbey’s intimate class sizes, VSI limits classes to 15 students, ensuring personalized instruction. External online learners will complete all coursework virtually.
The Veterum Sapientia Institute is dedicated to forming Catholics in their cultural and spiritual heritage by teaching Latin and Greek as living languages. VSI aims to be the premier institution for this mission and a leader in setting the standard for classical language pedagogy.
Through the Belmont Abbey–VSI partnership, students benefit from the best of both worlds: the flexibility and reach of online learning paired with the rich, personal engagement of an on-campus experience. This integration deepens the Greek major’s academic impact and equips students with tools for both professional success and lifelong learning.
