A great resource for financial help comes in the form of Federal and State aid. A variety of types of financial aid, from grants (which most often do not have to be repaid) to loans, are available. Review the grants and loans below, and be sure to apply to those that would be beneficial to you. Please note that promptly filling out the FAFSA will help you receive as much aid as possible.
FEDERAL PELL GRANT
The Pell grant provides college funding for students with a high degree of unmet financial need. The 2022-2023 minimum award is $692. The 2022-2023 maximum award is $6,895.
FEDERAL SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY GRANT (FSEOG)
This grant ranges from $200 to $4000 per academic year, depending on a student’s need and availability of funds. It does not have to be repaid, except in very specific circumstances.
NORTH CAROLINA NEED BASED SCHOLARSHIP
If you are a legal resident of North Carolina and enrolled for at least 9 credit hours, you may be eligible for this scholarship. In addition to the FAFSA, you must complete the online NC Residency Determination Service.
FEDERAL STUDENT LOAN PROGRAMS
Two types of Federal student loans are available:
Subsidized Stafford Loans do not accrue interest until a student is no longer enrolled on a half-time basis. This is a fixed-rate loan, with the interest rate set each year on July 1. Stafford Loan borrowers at Belmont Abbey College are required to complete an online Master Promissory Note and Loan Entrance Counseling.
Unsubsidized Stafford Loans are for students who do not meet the financial need criteria for a subsidized loan. With this loan, the student must pay the interest while still in school. If you can’t make the interest payments, they can be added to your principal balance. The interest rate is set each year on July 1, and is a fixed rate loan. Stafford Loan borrowers at Belmont Abbey College are required to complete an online Master Promissory Note and Loan Entrance Counseling.
FEDERAL LOAN PROGRAMS FOR PARENTS
PLUS Loans are available for every creditworthy parent who is a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen, and who has completed the FAFSA. Please apply by June 1. A delay can prevent the loan from being credited to your student’s account prior to first-semester tuition due date of July 1. PLUS Loan borrowers at Belmont Abbey College are also required to complete an online PLUS Application and Master Promissory Note.
Pursue as many outside scholarships as possible to make your Abbey education even more affordable.
GOLDEN LEAF SCHOLARSHIP
The Golden LEAF Scholarship Program is designed to assist current high school seniors and North Carolina community college transfer students. Recipients must be from certain rural counties, demonstrate both financial need and merit, and plan to attend participating North Carolina colleges and universities. The scholarship is funded by the Golden LEAF Foundation through a grant to the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority. The number of years of scholarship support depends on the degree sought and the number of credits transferred

ALTERNATIVE LOAN PROGRAMS
