Honoring Humpy Wheeler, Jr.
Humpy Wheeler, Jr, shared his passion for motorsport with the Abbey, and it has turned out to be quite a legacy for shaping Racing’s Future Stars! In 2007, he approached the leadership of the College about launching a Motorsport Management Program – one of the only ones in the country – to prepare young professionals for business, management, and marketing roles across the racing industry.
Eighteen years later, the program is thriving, and its graduates are making a real impact in racing organizations nationwide. Today, the Belmont Abbey College Motorsports Management Program serves both undergraduate and graduate students to forge a career in this exciting industry.
On-site industry immersion is central to the student experience. Each year, students head to landmark events such as the Daytona Rolex 24, Bristol, and the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. These trips spark lifelong connections, networking experiences, open doors for internships, and fuel our recruiting of the next class of Abbey students.
The Abbey values your support to help keep the motorsports talent pipeline wide-open. Gifts to support the Program cover travel expenses and fund student sponsorships, ensuring every motorsport student can take part – placing tomorrow’s racing leaders exactly where they need to be: trackside, meeting the professionals who can launch their careers.
Humpy’s dedication to our program and the Motorsport industry is truly unmatched and one-of-a-kind.
We will always cherish Humpy’s unwavering support to the young future stars of his sport and to our College.
May God rest his soul.

Driving the Business of Racing
Nearly twenty years ago when racing legend Humpy Wheeler brought the idea for an academic program built around motorsport, newly minted President Dr. Bill Thierfelder was intrigued. A decade later the Belmont Abbey College Motorsport Management program has evolved from a field of concentration to a full degree major and has become a viable resource for the racing industry.
