An Interview with a Tour Guide: The Inside Scoop on All Things Belmont Abbey

Author: The Crusader Staff Writer, Hannah Schudlik

When interviewing Belmont Abbey’s lead tour guide, Max Buico, I got the inside scoop on secrets about the campus and what it’s like to work for the Admissions Office.

On top of being a student-athlete, President of the Campus Activities Board, and the lead tour guide for the Admissions office, junior Max Buico has a lot on his plate. Fortunately, I had a chance to sit down and talk with Max to discuss his job and why it matters to the college’s community.

Hannah: Why did you become a tour guide?
Max: I became a tour guide to show prospective students what makes the Abbey great!

Hannah: What is something you make sure to tell visitors during a tour?
Max: I always make sure to tell visitors about our excellent professors.

Hannah: Is there anything visitors tend to ask you or want to know about the school?
Max: Visitors like to know what students do in their free time. I usually tell them that students hang out in the quad, drive into Charlotte, and attend sporting events on campus.

Hannah: Do you have a favorite spot to show off during tours?
Max: The adoration chapel. It’s a very peaceful place to pray and think.

Although the chapel may be Max’s favorite spot on campus, tour guides must pay attention to their student’s interests. For instance, if the prospective student is an athlete, the tour guide will mention the Wheeler Center and other athletic resources.

Hannah: What is the best part about working for the Admissions Office?
Max: I enjoy working with students who care about the school.

Belmont Abbey’s tour guides are vital to creating a friendly and welcoming environment. Our tour guides are the first people to meet on campus for most visitors and prospective students. Max explains that there is an “additional pressure” to make a good first impression of the college. Fortunately, the Admissions Office trains and prepares each of its guides to welcome and assist new students.

Model UN

Author: Dr. Clark Summers, Faculty

Belmont Abbey now has a Model United Nations Program. We fielded our first team of six students this semester and participated in the UNC Charlotte Conference on 14-16 October 2022. Our students represented two member states, Estonia and Malta, earning recognition as an Honorary Delegation for Malta.

Starting in the Spring ’23 semester, students will be able to receive academic credit for Model United Nations. PO 460 is a one-semester asynchronous course available to all interested students. PO 460 Model United Nations counts towards completion of the new International Relations minor. Students are also welcome to participate in Model UN without having to enroll in the academic class.

The Belmont Abbey Model UN team will next compete at the Southern Regional Model United Nations Conference in Charlotte, March 24-26, 2023.

If you are interested in participating in the Model UN program, please contact Dr. Clark Summers by emailing clarksummers@bac.edu.

Writing Center Opens at the Abbey

Author: The Crusader Staff Writer, Seth Farris

Writing papers can be hard, and learning to write at a college level can be even harder. To help students become better writers, the Belmont Abbey’s Writing Center was opened this semester. Located on the second floor of Stowe Hall, the Writing Center is a space for all students, no matter their level of experience, to receive assistance on their writing from fellow students. As the center’s official description states, “Students are welcome to come to the Writing Center during any stage in the process.” Whether you need help beginning an essay or simply want someone’s opinion on it, the Writing Center is here to help.

The Writing Center creates a welcoming and friendly environment by having Belmont Abbey students as its tutors who use their class experience to help others succeed. The tutors come from various backgrounds and have chosen different majors. Yet they personally understand the difficulty that can come with writing papers and want to help their peers with these struggles.

As a Writing Center tutor myself, I can sincerely say that the center is a great addition to Belmont Abbey College. The center is a good place for students to study, get feedback on their papers, and even meet new people. Being a tutor has given me the opportunity to meet more of my fellow students and witness some excellent writing from these students.

Although I’m a tutor, working in the Writing Center has benefited my writing abilities by encouraging me to think more about what goes into a thoughtful essay. When I tutor a student, I encourage them to think about how their main points connect and contribute to their topic. Doing this not only benefits the students but also helps me reconsider how I write my own papers.

The next time you’re writing a paper and have questions about it, come by the Writing Center in Stowe Hall! The center is open Monday through Thursday. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are encouraged and can be made via “Tutoring Options” on Canvas. A tutor will be available and ready to assist anyone needing help.

New Faculty: Dr. Clark Summers

Author: The Crusader Staff Writers

[From the Desk of Dr. Clark Summers]

“I joined Belmont Abbey College in the Fall of 2019 in the History Department as an adjunct lecturer in Western Civilization. I came to the Abbey with degrees in International Relations (MA, Salve Regina, ’04) and Strategic Studies (MSS, US Army War College, ’08) and Doctorate in Humanities, Philosophy of Technology (PHD, Salve Regina, ’19). Also, I am a retired US Army officer, having spent 30 years in the Army Reserve and Army National Guard, retiring as a Colonel in 2013. Starting in the Spring of 2020, I began offering course work in International Relations, Foreign Policy, and International Law. These courses have led to the establishment of an International Relations minor, support for a growing Politics Department, and creation of graduate school opportunities through Belmont Abbey’s new partnership with the Institute of World Politics in Washington, D.C.”

“I’m thrilled and delighted to be joining the faculty as a full-time Assistant Professor, and welcome any questions students might have on how courses in International Relations can enhance the Abbey experience.”
