Belmont Abbey College Expands Program in Washington, D.C. with Groundbreaking Initiatives

Belmont Abbey College Expands Program in Washington, D.C. with Groundbreaking Initiatives

Belmont, N.C. (February 28, 2025) – Belmont Abbey College is thrilled to announce an expansion of its Belmont House on Capitol Hill and its commitment to further establishing a significant presence in Washington, D.C., aimed at amplifying faithful Catholic voices in media, politics, and culture. As a Catholic higher education institution, Belmont Abbey College is making a decisive commitment to defend religious freedoms and restore the public square through three groundbreaking initiatives: the establishment of a permanent Belmont House, plans for an Intentional Catholic Student Residency Program, and aspirations for new Academic Programs dedicated to promoting the transformation of political life and discourse.

Considering our founding as one nation under God, the role of faith and the pursuit of truth have never been more important than they are today, and Belmont Abbey College is rising to the challenge. This effort is part of the “Made Strong” element of the College’s Made True Capital Campaign, which has raised more than $130 million for the College. The focus of “Made Strong” underscores Belmont Abbey’s commitment to realigning culture with God’s truth and highlighting the essential relationship between religious freedom and civil society. Today’s program expansion is made possible by gifts totaling $15 million to support the three initiatives. These gifts are part of a $45 million plan to increase the effectiveness and significance of Belmont House on Capitol Hill.

“We are taking Catholic higher education to a new level, we are ensuring that as a faithful Catholic college our voice is heard in the public square,” said Dr. Bill Thierfelder, President of Belmont Abbey College. “These initiatives will play a significant role in effecting the change needed to foster a culture that upholds faith, community, and the common good.”

The Belmont House: Since its founding in 2021, the Belmont House has quickly become a vital place of fellowship, collaboration, decision-making, and cultural influence on Capitol Hill. As just one example, strategic conversations held at the Belmont House during the International Religious Freedom Summit led directly to House Resolutions 82 and 5686, which address egregious human rights violations in Nigeria and Azerbaijan. With the acquisition of a new, permanent location on 3rd Street, just 500 feet from Capitol grounds, the College will continue to support and expand lay apostolates, convene thought leaders, build dynamic networks, and develop and offer programs with direct and tangible implications for public policy. Over the last three years, the Belmont House has already hosted dignitaries from across the globe, congressmen and senators addressing the issues of the day, alumni gatherings, and provided a space for impactful discussions and events that engage the broader public on issues of faith, culture, and politics.

Intentional Catholic Student Residency Program: Adjoining the new permanent Belmont House, we plan to develop an Intentional Catholic Student Residency Program that will foster community within safe, affordable living spaces for at least 30 Catholic undergraduates interning on the Hill. The College envisions this program as a catalyst for collaboration, designed to inspire and invigorate the next generation of leaders. This round of funding included acquiring adjacent properties for future development that will allow this program to grow to 60 students a semester.

Academic Programs: Our future Academic Programs to promote the Common Good and to transform political discourse to equip future leaders to defend the role of faith in our society will provide enrichment and rigorous, faithful formation to students across secondary and post-secondary levels. The College anticipates that young professionals in the intended master’s degrees will develop expertise in political writing, legislative affairs, campaign management, statecraft, and more, infusing American political life with the guiding principles of natural law and divine Truth.

Belmont Abbey College believes that restoring our culture begins with a vision of human flourishing through God’s providence, a vision embodied by the College’s exceptional alumni and informed by 1,500 years of Benedictine tradition. The College’s network of alumni in Washington, D.C., will play a crucial role in advancing these initiatives, providing a direct link to influential sectors in politics, government, and beyond. This network will create a pipeline for current and future students seeking careers in public service, media, and policymaking. By fostering connections between students and seasoned professionals, Belmont Abbey College aims to equip the next generation of leaders with the tools and knowledge needed to promote a culture rooted in faith, service, and moral integrity.

Through these efforts, the College is committed to making a lasting impact on society by shaping leaders who will advocate for the common good with a firm foundation in Catholic social teaching. Abbey alumni are a testament to these values and boldly carry them into the public sphere, inspiring others to do the same. Recent alumni like Lily Mullen, who currently serves as a Donor Relations Associate at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty; Grace Bruno, Health Policy Advisor in the U.S. Senate; and Nikolas von Spakovsky, Advance Team Associate for the Donald J. Trump for President 2024 campaign, are helping shape the political culture through their faith-driven service. These alumni exemplify the kind of leadership our culture urgently needs—leaders who approach challenges with a strong moral foundation rooted in faith.

“This is only the beginning for the Belmont House,” said Executive Director Emmett McGroarty. “The Belmont House will be an anchor for the faithful on Capitol Hill, bringing strong moral leadership and the teachings of the Church into the heart of politics and public life and serving as a home for Catholics on the Hill. We are proud to be a voice for truth, advocating for the restoration of faith in the public square.”

Abbot Placid, Chancellor of Belmont Abbey College, shared his thoughts on the significance of these initiatives: “We are establishing a place in Washington, D.C., where, building on St. Benedict’s instruction to receive all guests as Christ, we can offer a space for people of good will to gather to discuss and promote religious liberty and the important contributions that faith communities can bring to public life. As a Catholic college, we can place the insights of the Catholic intellectual tradition and the Church’s social teaching at the service of those tasked with shaping the life of our country.”

Belmont Abbey announced these groundbreaking initiatives during the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., on February 28, 2025, where the College also served as a sponsor of the event. This occasion underscores the College’s deep commitment to promoting faith and values at the highest levels of public discourse. Following the breakfast, Belmont Abbey officials will join former congressmen and other distinguished guests, including Bishop Michael Martin of the Charlotte Diocese, for a hard-hat tour of the new facilities.

As Belmont Abbey College continues to deepen its presence in Washington, D.C., it remains steadfast in its mission to promote the values of the Catholic faith, defend religious freedom, and contribute positively to society. Belmont Abbey College President Bill Thierfelder Announces Retirement After 21 Years of Service

Belmont Abbey College President Bill Thierfelder Announces Retirement After 21 Years of Service

Belmont, NC – February 19, 2025 – After over two decades of dedicated service, Dr. William (Bill) Thierfelder, the 20th president of Belmont Abbey College, has announced plans to retire effective August 2, 2025 – the 21st anniversary of his college leadership.

Since assuming the role in 2004, Dr. Thierfelder has led Belmont Abbey College through remarkable growth and transformation. Under his stewardship, the college has expanded academic programs, opened five new residence halls, enhanced campus facilities, launched and carried out an unprecedented $150 million capital campaign, reinvigorated the college’s Catholic identity, and strengthened community partnerships.

“Serving as president of Belmont Abbey College has been the joy of a lifetime,” said Dr. Thierfelder. “Together with an incredible team of administrators, faculty, and staff, we have achieved tremendous milestones. I am deeply grateful to our students, alumni, and supporters for their commitment to our shared mission.  I have overwhelming gratitude to God for giving me this charge and the grace of the confidence to know that I am leaving the college a more secure, more stable, and more faithful place dedicated to His mission.”

Dr. Thierfelder was driven by his faith to join the mission of Belmont Abbey College; inspired by an ad in a newspaper, he applied and, once hired, made it his life’s mission to strengthen the college for the glory of God. Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chuck Cornelio, reflected on the impact of his presidency. “Belmont Abbey College would not be the wonderful place it is if not for Bill Thierfelder.  Bill’s leadership over the last two decades has been instrumental, and we congratulate and honor his faith-filled stewardship of our vibrant Catholic community,” said Cornelio. “On behalf of the board, I want to thank Dr. Thierfelder for his unwavering commitment to the Abbey; we are pleased Bill will continue to be involved in many ways as the College progresses into the next era.”

Abbot Placid Solari, O.S.B. of Belmont Abbey Monastery, issued the following statement:

“On behalf of all the monks of Belmont Abbey, I wish to express our profound gratitude to Dr. and Mrs. Thierfelder for their twenty-one years of generous and dedicated service to Belmont Abbey College. Responding to what they perceived as a call, they arrived at a critical time in the College’s history in 2004.

Our monastic community can offer only gratitude and respect in response to Dr. Thierfelder’s decision that the time has come for him to step away from the office of President. We are happy that, after a very well-deserved sabbatical, we can look forward to welcoming Bill and Mary back to continued service as active members of our college community. We give thanks to God for their leadership and devoted service to Belmont Abbey and Belmont Abbey College.”

Key achievements during Dr. Thierfelder’s tenure include:

  • Achieved an academic level change to award master’s degrees with eight new programs launched
  • Launched the Honors Institute, which has now grown to the nationally recognized Honors College
  • Launched the nation’s premier Motorsports Business Management Program

Belmont Abbey College Names Hadley Arkes 2025 Benedict Leadership Award Recipient

Belmont Abbey College Names Hadley Arkes 2025 Benedict Leadership Award Recipient

Belmont, N.C. (February 10, 2025) – The Benedict Leadership Institute at Belmont Abbey College is pleased to recognize Hadley Arkes as the recipient of the 2025 Benedict Leadership Award. This award highlights the achievements of individuals whose lives reflect the heroic leadership of Saint Benedict.

Belmont Abbey College founded the Benedict Leadership Institute in 2016 to develop Catholic leaders and inspire them to transform society in light of their faith. Mr. Arkes is the eighth recipient of the Benedict Leadership Award, being recognized in part for his advocacy and preservation of children’s lives and his adherence to the doctrines of Natural Rights. The award will be presented in a ceremony at Belmont Abbey College on March 13, 2025.

Hadley Arkes is a distinguished American professor, political philosopher, and constitutional scholar, known for his contributions to legal and political theory, particularly within the context of natural law, constitutionalism, and moral reasoning. His work spans several decades, significantly influencing debates in law, politics, and ethics, especially regarding the interpretation of the U.S. Constitution and the moral foundations of law. Arkes has been a leading advocate for a natural law-centered approach to legal reasoning and has played a key role in developing conservative legal thought.

Born in 1940, Arkes earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois. He later earned a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago, where he was a student of Leo Strauss, Herbert Storing, and Hans Morgenthau. He began teaching at Amherst College in 1966, where he developed signature courses on moral philosophy and the Constitution. Those courses would eventually give rise to two of his most well-known books, First Things (1986), from which the Catholic journal took its name, and Beyond the Constitution (1990). His most recent book, Mere Natural Law (2023), springs from his past decade of work at the James Wilson Institute teaching lawyers, judges, law clerks, and citizens the first principles underlying the Constitution.

Arkes is best known for his advocacy of natural law as a framework for constitutional interpretation. His ideas have shaped the conservative legal movement, particularly on issues of abortion and the sanctity of life. He remained deeply involved in efforts to overturn or limit the scope of Roe v. Wade. He played a significant role in creating and promoting the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act in the 2000s, a critical piece of legislation aimed at ensuring that infants born alive after a failed abortion would receive medical care and legal protection.

“Hadley Arkes embodies the principles of leadership and moral clarity that the Benedict Leadership Institute seeks to promote,” says Conor Gallagher, Executive Director of the Benedict Leadership Institute. “His lifelong commitment to the protection of life and the advancement of natural rights serves as an inspiration to all who strive to lead with integrity and purpose.”

A devout Roman Catholic convert from Judaism, Arkes’s religious beliefs profoundly influence his academic and intellectual work. His commitment to the Catholic faith shapes much of his moral and political philosophy, particularly regarding issues like abortion, euthanasia, and the sanctity of life. He advocates for the integration of moral reasoning in public life, believing that religious and moral truths should inform the way laws are structured and interpreted.

Hadley Arkes stands as one of the most respected figures in contemporary political philosophy and constitutional law. His work, grounded in natural law principles and informed by his Catholic faith, continues to shape debates on fundamental issues such as abortion, constitutional interpretation, and the role of morality in public life.

The Benedict Leadership Award is a testament to the impact of individuals like Arkes, who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of justice and the betterment of society through their unwavering commitment to their faith. Prior recipients include Robert Luddy (2024), Nina Shea (2023), Archbishop Charles J. Chaput Benedict (2022), Justice Clarence Thomas (2020), Mr. Michael P. Warsaw (2019), Mr. Leonard A. Leo (2018), and Mr. Carl A. Anderson (2017).

Belmont Abbey College, home of the Benedict Leadership Institute, is a private Catholic liberal arts college located near Charlotte, NC. Founded in 1876 by Benedictine monks, it is recognized by the Cardinal Newman Society as one of America’s top Catholic colleges.

Belmont Abbey College Alumnus Celebrates Solemn Profession of Monastic Vows

Belmont Abbey College Alumnus Celebrates Solemn Profession of Monastic Vows

Belmont, N.C. (January 17th, 2024) – On the Memorial of Sts. Maur and Placid, Belmont Abbey celebrates the Solemn Profession of Vows of Brother Chrysostom Sica, formerly known as Joshua Sica, an alumnus of Belmont Abbey College’s class of ‘24. The ceremony took place at the Mary Help of Christians Basilica, where Brother Chrysostom was joined by his family, friends, students, and members of the college community.

In his homily, Abbot Placid emphasized that the monastic profession is a special calling that involves embracing the cross of Christ. Drawing from the Gospel of John, he reassured Brother Chrysostom with the words of Jesus, “Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be” (John 12:26). Abbot Placid congratulated Brother Chrysostom for responding faithfully to God’s call after four years of discernment with the monks.

Following the homily, Brother Chrysostom made his profession of the vows of stability, fidelity to the monastic life, and obedience according to the Rule of St. Benedict. Afterward, the monastic community exchanged the sign of peace with the newly professed monk, officially welcoming him as a vowed member of the community.

Brother Chrysostom, who graduated from Belmont Abbey College in 2024 with a degree in Philosophy, greatly benefited from the mentorship and guidance of the dedicated faculty during his studies. He is currently studying Theology at St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology in Meinrad, Indiana, and is in formation to become a priest.

The Solemn Profession of Vows is a profound moment for Brother Chrysostom personally, and it also represents a significant milestone for the entire Belmont Abbey community. Belmont Abbey College offers its continued prayers and support as Brother Chrysostom begins this new chapter as a fully professed monk.
